How StreamBIM Improved Communication and Collaboration for a Hospital Builder
Construction of hospitals involves many special deliveries and more advanced subjects. To improve communication between different disciplines and contract partners, the State-owned Hospital Construction Agency Sykehusbygg, uses StreamBIM on the job site and in office meetings to coordinate the progress of its building projects.
“We needed a BIM solution with a super easy user interface that would work on all devices because we have many experts on how to build a building, but not all of them wanted to start using BIM software. StreamBIM is a very intuitive software that provides drawings and processed 3D BIM in the same interface, and which can process BIM models for huge buildings,” says Lars Abrahamsen, project manager at Sykehusbygg.
“StreamBIM gives access to an updated model and absolutely all drawings for all disciplines and it’s easy to use – just tap with your finger on the iPad or your smartphone and you have access to all the information you need to do a proper job on site. Once we began using the software we noticed that the collaboration between different disciplines increased as they started to exchange information and knowledge. The people on site started taking pictures and capturing information about their work, and shared a lot of information showing their progress. We noticed that people really want to share and work together if it contributes to improving their own efficiency. As a result, StreamBIM became very popular to work with and it really helped us to achieve more collaboration and fewer conflicts,” Abrahamsen explains.
Super Easy to Capture Information
Abrahamsen says that he likes how StreamBIM simplifies the work with documentation and capturing information from a construction site.
If you notice that something might be wrong compared to the model and the drawings, you can easily check the 3D BIM model and then you can add a picture to the room or object showing what it looks like on site. This information is shared in real time and can easily be filtered by using the smooth document tags in StreamBIM, so everyone on the project is always up to date. Everyone has access to updated and published drawings, the 3D BIM model, installation instructions, work orders, and outstanding issues etc. — from any kind of device. StreamBIM is such a simple solution to solve the information complexities we have in this industry. The software allows users to add drawings and descriptions, and share a documentation package with text, photos, and BIM explaining the problem. Abrahamsen says, “Test it out yourselves. Besides being more efficient, this software will make your work even more fun.”
StreamBIM Streamlines Communication
“Many people will recognize the situation where the model is not prepared before a meeting and the result is spending a lot of time trying to explain and describe complex geometric conditions. But when our team had StreamBIM on our iPads or smartphones we brought the model and our experiences and pictures into our meetings. We found having the model easily accessible all the time allowed us to collaborate much more efficiently. We pulled up the model on a big screen and were able to see the same picture. As a result, we were able to find smooth solutions to problems we were not able to sort out previously. When you have all the BIM model files from different disciplines in a federated 3D BIM model it gives the team a completely different understanding,” he says.
“There are so many high-tech software products that are made by engineers for engineers, but why do they have to make digitalization so complex and difficult that it makes people afraid of taking part in a change needed within the industry.
“There are many special deliveries due to special requirements — especially for hospital buildings, and communicating and collaboration tends to be difficult. By using StreamBIM we found good solutions faster and we had fewer conflicts on the construction site. By improving communication, we ensured better end results – we saved both time and money,” says Abrahamsen.
StreamBIM was Used for Virtual Tours for End Users
Sykehusbygg also used StreamBIM to give virtual tours to end users including nurses, doctors, and office personnel while the building was in production, so they could start to plan and prepare how to organize their work. “It’s too late and expensive to find out that something is wrong when people start to move in, so doctors and nurses sometimes participate in inspections on the construction site as well. The medical and administrative staff viewed the 3D model and the installations which were done to preview the new buildings and ensure their specifications were met. It was a huge success when we introduced StreamBIM for this purpose. We noticed that StreamBIM is perfect for both VR and AR solutions so we are already looking forward to the next generation of the software.
