#6 - StreamBIM for Infra in NCC - The Bypakke Ålesund project in Western Norway
In presentation #6 from the 2025 edition of StreamBIM Day Stockholm, NCC Infrastructure BIM coordinator Espen Grongstad shows how StreamBIM is being used for a fully model-based construction of an infrastructure project in the Norwegian city of Ålesund.
The ‘E 136 Breivika-Lerstad’ project is the new main access road to Ålesund and is part of the larger infrastructure upgrade project called Bypakke Ålesund.
A long-awaited improvement that had been in planning for 40 years, the new main road mostly runs in tunnels below the city, but also consists of some above-ground sections and bridges.

Main Themes and Key Points
Site Visualization
- Orthophotos & drone imagery: Updated regularly, providing high-resolution terrain overviews integrated into StreamBIM.
- Point clouds: Provide 3D depth and accurate geometry for planning and design validation.
Model Navigation & Views
- Large, complex models split into discipline-based custom views (e.g., electrical conduits).
- Object data (type, ownership, MMI, etc.) accessible directly from the model.
Planning & Design Validation
- Point clouds + models allow visualizing future structures (e.g., bridges, culverts) in existing terrain.
- Supports early detection of challenges, measurements, and clash avoidance.
Checklists & Quality Control
- All structures linked to checklists for progress tracking.
- Status shown in color-coded views (not started / started / completed).
- Skilled workers and supervisors fill checklists → exported as PDFs to client.
- Enhances documentation, progress monitoring, and reduces production errors.
Issue Tracking
- All deviations, safety incidents (RUHs), and issues registered directly in StreamBIM.
- Issues are geo-located on site maps, with photos and documentation attached.
- Data exported to Excel/PDF and used in Power BI dashboards for statistics and trends.
Work Documentation
- Models and drawings centralized in StreamBIM; easy access for workers.
- Revision tool highlights model updates, ensuring everyone works with the latest information.
- Models split into construction stages with filtered views (e.g., reinforcement layers, conduits).
- Consultant-added instructions included in the views, making execution clearer.
Value Added by StreamBIM
- Direct link between documentation and model objects.
- Accessible tools for production:
- BIM containers (onsite stations with screens & mouse).
- Tablets and mobile devices.
- Strong traceability of issues and documentation.
- Real-time updated work documentation.
- Improved visual communication and collaboration across disciplines.
- Close cooperation with Rendra/StreamBIM team, who adapted the software based on user feedback.
We especially appreciate how Espen highlighted the positive experiences of using StreamBIM, the collaborative relationship with Rendra, and emphasized how the tool has streamlined processes, improved communication, and supported production on a complex infrastructure project.
“The project team feels listened to, improvements are continuously made, and StreamBIM has been a major enabler of success in Bypakke Ålesund.”
